Purpose:
A means of pictorially representing 1813 Frenchtown through the works of
local artists, the art contest is sponsored by the Bicentennial Steering
Committee and the Monroe County Historical Museum. Designed to promote
the upcoming War of 1812 Bicentennial, it will also help fund the River
Raisin Battlefield project. All work submitted must be available for
purchase, with the understanding that by entering the contest, the artist
permits reproduction of his or her work by the Monroe County Historical
Museum for promotional and funding purposes.
Theme: The River Raisin Battlefield and life in 1813 Frenchtown, its people, battles, recorded incidents and personalities, and war’s aftermath in the area. Authenticity is stressed in depiction of clothing, tools, and weapons, architecture, topography, flora and fauna, times and locations of action scenes, etc. Eligibility: Age 18 and over. Categories: Oils and heavy acrylics Watercolors and diluted acrylics used as water color Pastels, charcoals, pencil and ink drawings Photo Re-creation & photo manipulation Clay/Wood/Metal Sculpting/Carving (12" x 12" maximum) Place: All art contest activities take place at: Bedford Library, 8575 Jackman Road, Temperance, Michigan Entry date: March 3, 2010, 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Entries: All styles and techniques of painting are acceptable. Three (3) works per entrant. Completed within past year, created exclusively by entrant, copied in no way, appropriately framed and wired for hanging, no saw tooth bars. Glass covered pieces should not have sealed backs. Easy removal from frame is necessary if painting is to be photographed for reproduction. Size limit of 40" both directions including frame. Entry Forms: Cut strips along lines indicated. Do not cut strips into individual forms. Tape only left section of strip to upper left corner of frame back, leaving remainder of strip loose (to be removed for record keeping by show committee). All these forms on each. Judging: March 8, 2010, screening of artwork for authenticity by a well qualified authority on the War of 1812, and as it related to Frenchtown in particular. Approved paintings will then be judged on artistic merit. Winners: To be notified by phone only on March 9-10, 2010. All artwork must remain on display for two weeks. Award winning artwork must remain until the show is complete. All others will be released from Bedford Branch after the two weeks. Awards: $150 first place, $100 second place, $50 third place and two (2) honorable mentions to be presented in each category at an award ceremony on March 13, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. One guest per entrant may attend the ceremony. A traveling exhibition of winning work will visit all sixteen Monroe County Library System branch locations in turn, beginning with Bedford Library following the award ceremony. Information concerning the exhibition scheduling will be made available at a future date.
